Alex Kawa, PhD

Principal Investigator

Alex completed his PhD in Biopsychology at the University of Michigan under the mentorship of Dr. Terry Robinson. His doctoral research focused on how different temporal patterns of drug delivery influence the development of addiction-like behavior and the neurochemical changes driving these behaviors. He then joined Dr. Marina Wolf’s lab at Oregon Health & Science University as a postdoc, where he investigated the neuroplasticity underlying ‘incubation of drug craving’. In 2026, Alex will join the Department of Neurosciences at the University of New Mexico as an Assistant Professor, where his lab will explore how cholinergic interneurons influence motivation, learning, and addiction-related behaviors.

Outside of the lab, Alex enjoys hiking with his wife and dog, cooking, and finding new restaurants.
